PURTON HULKS
by
Derek Newton-Goverd
Photographer and Marine Archivist
The Purton Hulks are a very important National Treasure of Trows, Schooners, Barges etc., placed on the banks of the River Severn, between Sharpness and Purton since 1905, with the aim to protect the Sharpness canal from erosion by the strong currents of the River Severn.
As a photographer and a Marine Archivist, who as a teenager used to sail the Bristol Channel and the River Severn. I became interested in this site in the summer of 2007 and have decided to record the site(with the help of Paul Barnett Marine Historian for the site.), as the vessels gradually disappear through natural causes and vandalism.
Some of the hulks are over 110 years old and are a monument to the people who built and sailed them and a way of life long gone.
